About Doctari Hunting
Doctari Safaris was established by Steve and Nicky Dougherty in 1997 and offers free-range and fair chase hunts to discerning hunters. Located in the ‘big sky’ region of the Maniototo Basin, near the town of Ranfurly, and equal short distance from either Dunedin or Queenstown airport it has a reputation as a premier South Island trophy hunting destination for national and international clients. Positively profiled in several New Zealand hunting magazines and described as a ‘hunting utopia’ by The USA Hunting Report it is well known amongst the hunting community.
Return clients are the norm, and each visit sees them bring new friends to saviour the elite outdoors experiences on offer. Garrawaye is a special hunting spot. Located on Rough Ridge range, the hunting terrain consists of rock tors, rolling creases and folds clothed in grass clearings, native matagouri and prickly sweet briar undergrowth. The nearby Hawkdun Range dominates the backdrop and is one of the most stunning line of mountains in New Zealand, often featured in the paintings of artist Grahame Sydney. Garrawaye is home to trophy red stag and trophy fallow buck, merriam turkeys, wild boar, wild goat, upland gamebirds, waterfowl and small game such as rabbits and hares. In addition to the abundant game on offer, there is a luxury accommodation lodge, a 2,000 acre lowland estate perfectly suited for bow-hunting or rifle, 20,000 acres of free range territory, and off-site bull tahr and chamois hunting, plus local trout angling. Steve is an experienced, outgoing guide who makes any hunting trip fun. In addition to Steve and Nicky, the Dougherty clan consists of three children Charlie, Tia and Billy.
